2010 sees the 150th anniversary of fish and chips - now with an estimated 10,500 shops in the UK and over 250 million portions sold a year - its come a long way from its humble beginnings....the first ever mention of fried fish was in Charles Dickens novel, Oliver Twist, published in 1837. Then in the 1850s, street traders sold pieces of fried fish and cooked 'shaved' potatoes in newspapers on the streets and alleys of London. Joseph Malin was said to have opened the first fish and chip shop back in the 1860s outside London in Mossley, and Mr John Lees opened a shop near Ashton in Cheshire soon after in 1863.

Nowadays standards in the industry are higher then ever before - fish is sourced from sustainable stocks, potatoes are of the highest quality and oil management has become a priority.

2010 is also an important milestone for Florigo who have been supplying the highest quality, bespoke frying ranges since 1951 and have just completed the move to the new, state of the art, factory in Woerden, Netherlands.

Florigo are very lucky to have had 4 contenders for the title this year, each having won a prestigious regional award.
